College Scholarships

$2,000 College Scholarship (open to high school graduating seniors).

Since 1982, Paint Creek Center for the Arts has been nurturing aspiring young artists through its college scholarship program open to graduating high school seniors attending Rochester Community Schools.  We know the importance of a quality art education and our scholarships help students with the ever-rising cost of tuition. Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited college majoring in a visual arts program and provide a letter of acceptance with their submission.

One (1) $2000 scholarship will be awarded which can be applied towards tuition and expenses in the Fall of 2018 to attend college. Award winners will be selected after a competitive review of digital images and support materials.

The scholarship is made possible through donations to the Mary McCarthy Anderson Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund pays tribute to Mary McCarthy Anderson who was an attorney, an accomplished artist, devoted member of the Sisters of the Brush and a longtime student at Paint Creek Center for the Arts.

2018 Scholarship Recipient: Rachel Rettie

I have always wrestled with the pressure of school authorities trying to channel me towards STEM-based career pathways. Seeing those close to me pursue these studies enforced my impression that pursuing art was a shameful act, even from an only child like me who has been raised by parents that are both in the creative field. Working in art has been something I have been exposed to my whole life, witnessing and learning the value of hard work and loving what you do. No wonder I couldn’t swat away the artist bug.

For the extent of elementary school, I wanted to dive into the world of interior design—a fascination I have maintained over the years. As we all revised and refined our interests in middle school, I set my heart on graphic design. My passion for art has grown stronger throughout my high school career, by taking classes at Paint Creek Center for the Arts and CCS, working on a 2D portfolio in AP Studio Art, participating in my school music programs for seven years and serving as editor-in-chief on the yearbook staff. I am a proponent of creativity’s importance in society, anticipating the continual need for human imagination in an increasingly robotic workforce. I see the fierce urge to go into high-paying occupations, rather than a job you love, as a performance of backwards reasoning. Success should stem from happiness, not the other way around. This would create a society where people love their lives and contribute to the world just a sliver more. I won’t go into this scared. Art is my choice, and I will never apologize for it.

Rachel Rettie is going to be attending the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design at University of Michigan this fall. She is going to be pursuing a BFA in Art and Design.
