Delicacy by Morgan Gallagher
“This piece is one of the first out of my AP Studio Art concentration portfolio this year. My concentration theme circles around femininity and how it connects to the natural world around us. The title of each piece reflects a different virtue that remains admirable in women and girls- some examples include Strength, Beauty, and Rebellion. With each live model, (of which I chose out of the vast pool of virtuous women in my daily life; with this, I wanted to make the portraits truer and more honest to everyday beauty) I chose an aspect of nature that coincides with the virtue each person holds. This specific piece, titled Delicacy, highlights the simple innocence and fragility of young girls, as they still hold a specific brand of delicate youth. I decided on my younger sister as a model alongside an array of bright watercolor peonies to transfer the delicate and beautiful nature of this specific flower type.”
Shadows by Morgan Gallagher
“I chose this piece to include in my AP Studio Art breadth portfolio. I consider this as a successful experiment, as my experience with highlighting and oil paint had been rather limited. Instead of using dark shading upon a light background to create facial structure, I decided to try the opposite. Upon this, I found that I preferred the opposite method when creating such dramatic pieces (i.e. creating light, depth, etc). I believe that this piece is important to my portfolio because it remained exploratory and pushed me farther as an artist.”
$2,000 College Scholarship (open to high school graduating seniors).
Since 1982, Paint Creek Center for the Arts has been nurturing aspiring young artists through its college scholarship program open to graduating high school seniors attending Rochester Community Schools. We know the importance of a quality art education and our scholarships help students with the ever-rising cost of tuition. Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited college majoring in a visual arts program and provide a letter of acceptance with their submission.
One (1) $2000 scholarship will be awarded which can be applied towards tuition and expenses in the Fall of 2017 to attend college. Award winners will be selected after a competitive review of digital images and support materials.
The scholarship is made possible through donations to the Mary McCarthy Anderson Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund pays tribute to Mary McCarthy Anderson who was an attorney, an accomplished artist, devoted member of the Sisters of the Brush and a longtime student at Paint Creek Center for the Arts.
